Show and Tells
What they are: Show and Tells are events where greyhound adopters bring their hounds to meet the public and potential adopters to show them what great companions greyhounds make. They are great fun for the greyhounds because they get petted, cuddled and most of all to visit with their greyhound friends. The events are fun for the adopters because they get to meet other adopters, swap greyhound stories and tips and to educate potential greyhound adopters about what greyt pets they are.
Why they are important: The main reason is that GPA gets a majority of their adoption applications from people who met our greyhounds at one of these events. So anyone who helps at one of these events can be assured you they are doing their part to help find homes for the beautiful hounds.
Why come: If you have a greyhound then come meet other adopters and let your hounds socialize. If you ever thought of adopting a greyhound come meet, pet and cuddle the greyhounds and talk to adopters about their favorite subject – their greyhound!
Where they are: They are held monthly at pet stores and also at special events like home shows, parades, and picnics. For an up to date listing of Show & Tell locations, dates and times see the Calendar of Events part of this Web Site.
What to bring: Your greyhound or hounds of course, a bed or quilt for him or her to rest on and a willingness to share your greyhound experience. Since most Show & Tells last 3 hours your greyhounds will appreciate that bed or quilt so they can take their afternoon snooze. It is that snooze and general peacefulness of the greyhounds that amazes people and makes them wonder out loud how they can be so relaxed, even out in public.
Who to contact: If you are interested in attending an event near you just show up or call the Show & Tell Lead person listed for the specific Show & Tell. If you have questions about Show & Tells in general, want to volunteer your time, suggest a new location or want us to participate in a special event call the Show & Tell Coordinator, Alison Bourke at (714) 335-8906.

Retirement Day Every few weeks, dogs are brought from the track and prepared to enter a foster home. Each dog is physically checked, given all its shots, and wormed. It is tested and observed to determine its tolerance to cats and small animals. It also receives its GPA name. Each dog is bathed, has its nails clipped and its ears cleaned. Finally, the greyhounds meet their foster families. The greyhounds need those who can help during their first grooming. This is an opportunity to be among the first to give a newly retired racer a big hug (sometimes a wet one) and loving care, and share in the excitement of watching another beauty emerge. To volunteer for this activity, contact Joyce McRorie at (562)694-3519. In order to receive notification of these events please join the Yahoo Group GreyhoundGab.
Dog Wash Once a quarter, we take appointments to wash greyhounds. This is all day event divided into two shifts. We can always use people to wash, dry, clip nails, clean ears, brush dogs, & even just hold the dogs as they move through each station. To volunteer contact Theresa Padilla at (562) 232-4096.
Annual Picnic This fun day in the park requires many volunteers. We need people to help set up & take down/clean up, people to man the many booths including the food booth, people to help with the cooking of hamburgers & hot dogs, and much more. If you would like to spend a couple of hours helping this picnic be a success, please contact Joyce McRorie at (562) 694-3519.
Transportation Even though they are known for getting around pretty quickly, the greyhounds rely on us for their transportation. During the greyhound's stay with a foster family, it is scheduled for spaying or neutering and teeth cleaning. Foster families cannot always transport the dogs to these appointments. Also, we often transport greyhounds to other greyhound adoptions groups & GPA subchapters. If you can provide transportation, please let us know. Each ride is an opportunity to give a little more reassurance to a greyhound friend who is entering a new world. Contact Joyce (562) 694-3519.
Home during the day? Events or errands often need to be accomplished during weekdays when many of our volunteers are at work. Let us know if your schedule would allow you to help with weekday events or errands. Many fun greyhound surprises have popped up during the week! Contact Joyce (562) 694-3519.
Telephone calling We continually make telephone calls to remind people of upcoming Show and Tells, follow-up calls to foster parents or new adopters, or handling requests for information from volunteers. This does not involve soliciting for donations. If you enjoy talking on the phone and talking about greyhounds, this job is for you. Contact Joyce (562) 694-3519. |
