Strolling with the Hounds

What do all of these greyhounds have in common?  They suffered a broken hock while racing at Agua Caliente and were picked up by GPA/CA-OCGLA.  All of these hocks have been surgically repaired at Southern California Veterinary Referral Group between 3/17/06 and 10/21/07.  We receive a discount from SoCal but, nevertheless, our annual bill there is usually over $80,000.00.  This year, we will probably reach $100,000.00. 

Many of you either have adopted one of our “broken dogs” and more of you have met them.  It is absolutely out of the question that we would ever leave one of them behind, and you wouldn’t want us to either. 

We anticipate that adoptions will go down until our fellow Californians recover from these devastating fires.  When adoptions go down, we bring in fewer healthy greyhounds, but always respond to the call for the sick and injured.  With the Tucson Track in trouble and tracks closing all over the country, Caliente is receiving more and more greyhounds.  Remember when we would go down and empty the Pet Kennel?  Well, that never happens now.  When we arrive and are loading up greyhounds, there are working kennel operators leashing up their retired dogs for the race to the Pet Kennel which is filled again even before we leave.
