The Process

FastFriends seeks qualified adoptive homes that are committed to responsible pet ownership. We have established formal procedures to ensure that retired racers are placed in loving homes with people who will take good care of them. Browse our website and read over the adoption agreement.

Prospective owners must understand that greyhounds need to be house pets, since they have little natural protection from the elements. Due to their breeding and training, they must be leashed when not in an enclosed area.

Completion of an Application

If, after reviewing the information on this web site, you are interested in adopting a greyhound, please complete the online adoption application. You may also call FastFriends for a printed application.

Visit by a Placement Representative

When your completed application is received, a placement representative will arrange a convenient time to visit with you in your home. During the visit, you and the placement representative will put together a profile of the greyhound best suited to your lifestyle and needs. While there, the placement representative will answer your questions. Should you decide to adopt and should your application be approved, your placement representative will suggest ways to make the addition of your greyhound a safe and happy experience for all concerned.

Dogs in Foster Care

Once a greyhound has been placed in a foster home, we prepare a “profile” about that dog with the help of their foster family. To read about our foster program and the role of the foster families see here. The profile contains information on personality, activity levels, special traits and other factors that help us understand each dog. We compare the foster dogs’ profiles to the one you prepared with your placement representative and determine which of the available dogs seem best suited to your family, home situation and preferences. We then put you in touch with the foster family of the dog that best matches your needs. You can talk with the foster family and arrange a visit to meet the dog. When you have found the greyhound of your dreams (and you will!), we help you complete the adoption arrangements.

Contract and Payment

The signed contract and payment is due when you receive your new greyhound. Your placement representative will have you fill out a one-page form and will provide you with a packet of information. The adoption fee is $400; which includes a $50 tax-deductible adoption donation to help us cover our costs and continue adoptions, and a $350 fee toward the dog's neutering or spaying, teeth care (cleaning, polishing, and any extractions that may have been necessary), worming, Heart Worm test, blood testing, and shots (DHLPP, Rabies, Bordatella and Corona vaccinations), all done before the greyhound goes home with you. Each dog is supplied a FastFriends identification tag, and a greyhound safety collar and matching leash.

Congratulations!

You are now the proud owner of a wonderful greyhound!
