Bart's Maestro
It was October 15 when I woke up to a beautiful day at Caliente Greyhound Park and, there was excitement in the air. I had heard that a group of Americans were coming to visit our pet kennel and exotic animal zoo and might even watch a few races. I wondered if I was going to race that day and hoped that they would like me if I did. Breakfast came and I knew that my wish would come true. A small breakfast means a race around the track and lots of people cheering. I hoped some of those Americans would be there.
The lead-outs walked us in front of the crowd and there were lots of people on the rail jumping all over the place and cheering us on. Some were yelling, “Go number four!” , “Go Barts Maestro!!” Wow, this was more attention that I had gotten in a while and I decided right then and there that I was going all out in this race.
Things were going great until the far turn and I felt a snap in my right leg and lots of pain. My handler ran out, grabbed me and began to run off the track. At the same time, three people I had never seen before, ran up to him and said, “We’ll take him and bring him to a vet for repair. Actually, the rest of what happened that day, is very vague to me as I was really hurting by then.
Turns out that October 15 was a beautiful day after all and, although at first the going was tough, I am now in a foster home recuperating from surgery and looking forward to the second stage of my life. Lucky me, I chose to bust up my hock on the very day that Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption had their annual fund raising bus trip to our track.
It will cost around $5,000 to repair my hock and that seems like a lot of money to me. I am the 20th “broken dog” that Fast Friends has helped so far this year and it sure would be nice if you could contribute something to the Maestro Fund.

Maestro and Roxie, another one of our broken leg fosters.
